Working with local animal shelters from across the country, PETCO Animal Supplies Inc. and its non-profit PETCO Foundation helped find homes for nearly 2,500 companion animals during its Fourth Annual National Pet Adoption Days.
Several hundred animal shelters participated in the PETCO-sponsored event. The total number reported includes adoptions initiated or completed in PETCO's more than 540 participating stores and does not include animals adopted at partner shelter facilities during the campaign.
Over the last four years this one-weekend national campaign has helped find homes for approximately 10,000 companion animals. In addition to this concentrated effort, PETCO and the PETCO Foundation work with shelters and humane groups across the nation on an ongoing basis by hosting mobile adoptions in the PETCO stores. Nearly 500,000 pets have been adopted over the years through these efforts.
"Our goal in this campaign is two-fold," said Paul Jolly, PETCO Foundation Director. "First, we help inform prospective pet parents just what it takes to properly care for their new best friend. Second, this national campaign helps spread the message that animal shelters offer a wide variety of companion animal breeds that need loving homes. People who want to bring a new pet or add a companion animal to their family should seriously consider adopting," Jolly added.
PETCO, based in San Diego, is a leading pet specialty retailer with more than 540 stores in 41 states and the District of Columbia. Established in 1965, PETCO has been supporting companion animal organizations with cash, premium pet food and supplies since then as part of its "part of the community" commitment.
The PETCO Foundation was formed in February 1999 to work with community organizations and efforts that enhance the lives of companion animals while strengthening the bond between people and pets. Since its recent inception, more than $4.5 million have been raised through a variety of Foundation fundraising efforts.
