PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc., the PETCO Foundation and The Iams Company are teaming up with the San Diego Humane Society this weekend, in an effort to bring attention to homeless companion animals and highlight the value of pet adoptions.
This is the 5th Annual PETelethon hosted by the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, airing Saturday, March 2 from noon to 5 p.m. on FOX 6. PETCO and Iams are the program sponsors, and this is not the first time the two pet supply companies have joined forces to aid the plight of animals in need of loving homes. Between November and January, PETCO and Iams supported the Home 4 the Holidays campaign, which saw more than 100,000 orphaned pets matched with families across the country.
The PETCO Foundation, whose mission is to support organizations, shelters and programs that enhance the lives of animals and celebrate the human-animal bond, will be presenting a $10,000 check to the San Diego Humane Society during the telethon.
"The Foundation is pleased to sponsor groups like the San Diego Humane Society because of all they do to help save the lives of adoptable animals," Foundation Director Paul Jolly said, "and for their commitment to educating the general public about the joys companion animals bring to those around them."
PETCO and Iams will each present $5,000 checks to the society during Saturday's event.
The telethon will feature adoptable animals, heartwarming adoption vignettes, up-to-date news on animal issues, segments on the shelter's programs and services and special interviews with experts from the San Diego Humane Society. There will be a phone bank staffed by volunteers from the society, PETCO and Iams, and pledges can be made by calling 1-888-261-9910.
This year's celebrity hosts include John Elliot and Anita Lightfoot of FOX in the Morning, Airwatch America's Pamela Howe, KOOL 95.7 FM's Dave Mason and Magic 92.5 FM's Delana Bennett. Live music will be provided by Spaceman Spiff.
