Duddles served Jack-in-the-Box, Inc. in several capacities dating back to 1979, hired originally as the company's controller, and rising through the ranks to executive vice president and chief financial officer. He also served on the company's board of directors, from 1988 until his retirement in August 2001.

In addition to his fast-food restaurant experience, Duddles served 11 years with Price Waterhouse, and held several financial positions at Ralston Purina Co. in St. Louis.

Duddles was not completely retired when the PETCO board tapped him; he also serves on the board of the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties as Chairman, and he is currently the Vice-Chairman of the East County Performing Arts Board in El Cajon. He is past President of the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
