A protest over Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick's appearance in San Diego against the Chargers will help feed the pets of homebound senior citizens. The PETCO Foundation working, "hand-in-paw" with Main Line Animal Rescue (MLAR) will deliver 60 bags (1,530 pounds) of dog food and 700 cans of cat and dog food to Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) this Wednesday morning. The food will go to the Center's AniMeals program, which generally sees a drop in pet food donations during the holiday season.
HWAC spokesman John Van Zante says, "Pennsylvania-based Main Line Animal Rescue wants to make sure we never forget the abuse that took place in Michael Vick's dog fighting operation. Here in San Diego they're working with our friends at the PETCO Foundation to help feed the pets of homebound senior citizens and, at the same time, remind people about the cruelty."
Susan Rosenberg, Director of the PETCO Foundation, adds, "Main Line Animal Rescue has donated $1,000 toward this food donation. The PETCO Foundation is not only matching that but has also worked with many of the other pet food vendors to increase the donation."
AniMeals Supervisor Holly Coughlin says the food will be delivered to Helen Woodward Animal Center on Wednesday morning between 10:30 and 11:00 AM.
Main Line Animal Rescue is holding similar events in each city where Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles are playing this season. In each city MLAR encourages animal lovers and local groups to join the protest and to donate to a worthy animal welfare organization. In San Diego the donated food will go to HWAC's AniMeals program.
A truck carrying the donated cat and dog food will arrive at the Del Mar PETCO store at 2749 Via De La Valle then be transported 5 miles to Helen Woodward Animal Center.
