SAN DIEGO, Aug. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Pet lovers across the country can be animal philanthropists by attending Petco's National Adoption Weekend at stores nationwide August 23-24, 2014, and help give a homeless pet a forever home. The definition of a philanthropist is "a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others." The weekend will highlight the many advantages of adopting pets of all shapes, sizes, and ages, as well as how adoption gives back to pet communities everywhere. Here are some ways adoption gives back:
- Provides a deserving animal a loving, forever home.
- Prevents overcrowding in animal shelters and gives animals the chance at life with a caring family.
- The fee for adopting a pet will go towards benefiting other animals to help with shelter maintenance, vaccination costs, food, supplies and more.
- Saves a life by lessening the need for euthanasia on un-adopted pets in shelters.
Hill's Science Diet is sponsoring the adoption events taking place at all Petco and Unleashed by Petco locations. All new adoptive pet parents will take home a free bag of Hill's Science Diet dog or cat food, 5-pounds or smaller, and a free can of Hill's Science Diet dog or cat food. Pet adoption times vary, so it's recommended to contact the nearest location for adoption hours. For more information on adoption events, visit www.petco.com/adoptions.
To carry on the theme of philanthropy, Petco and the Petco Foundation are uniting for the Together We Can Fundraiser, which launches during National Adoption Weekend with a donation drive. The fundraiser will benefit animal welfare organizations that work hard to find homes for pets, provide spay/neuter services, manage animal assisted therapy programs and offer humane education programs.
Purchase any bag of dog or cat food or treats from Natural Balance, Canidae, Hill's Science Diet, Solid Gold and Royal Canin between August 22—24 and $1 will be donated to the Petco Foundation. For those unable to attend the drive, but still want to do their part to help save more lives, they can make a donation to the Together We Can Fundraiser at their local Petco or online at Petco.com through September 7, 2014.
