Halloween conjures up visions of ghosts, goblins, treats and tricks for humans. Pet owners, however, often overlook their companion animal's well being during the festivities. Pets need special attention this holiday to stay healthy and safe.
So, along with costumes and treats sold exclusively for pets, PETCO stores are offering several tips to assure pets can have a safe and fun Halloween.
Dressed to the Tails. When dressing up your feline and canine friends, be sure that no parts of the costume interfere with their breathing or ability to see. Check them from time-to-time to make sure they're comfortable and not overheated. Also make sure there aren't any pieces that could choke or tangle the animal. And never leave a costumed pet alone!
Sweets for Your Sweetums? Keep candy and other goodies far away from your pets. Chocolate is harmful, and even fatal in some instances, to cats and dogs. Sweet treats are also bad for your pet's teeth and overall health. Instead, PETCO offers an assortment of Halloween-shaped cookies specifically for dogs!
Who's that Knockin'? When the witches and warlocks start ringing your doorbell, make sure your pet is secure. The constant opening and closing of the front door can serve as a quick escape for your pet, and seeing all of those new faces can make them anxious. Keep pets enclosed in another area of the house, if possible. And always make sure they have pet I.D. tags on in case they do escape.
Black Cats go Undercover. Your black, or darkly colored, cat is at risk during Halloween. Keep a close eye on your pet and keep him indoors, if possible, to avoid the danger of pranksters.
Halloween is a great time for fun, frolicking and treats. Be sure to keep your pet safe too!
