American Humane is the world’s largest certifier of animal welfare, protecting more than 1 billion animals around the globe with the most recognized, credible and respected humane programs. To validate and further advance our own long-standing, industry-leading standards for animal care, Petco invited American Humane to conduct independent on-site audits and observations of the following key wellness indicators for the pets in our care:
- Behavior
- Veterinary care
- Habitats
- Nutrition
- Safety
Following a thorough and careful independent evaluation of the welfare, well-being and overall condition of all small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and aquatic life, American Humane affirmed pets at Petco pet care centers and supplier facilities enjoy excellent attention at every step of their journey to their new families.
American Humane’s independent review joins Petco’s already established roster of stringent animal care policies, procedures and guidelines designed to ensure animals feel loved, happy, comfortable and secure at all times. These standards were developed, and are continually updated, under the supervision of our own veterinary staff, along with counsel from an independent panel of experts in animal care, behavior, ethics and welfare.

AMERICAN HUMANE’S PROCESS:
American Humane convened an unmatched, independent Scientific Advisory Committee comprised of highly respected experts in animal welfare, science, behavior and ethics, that outlined and directed a comprehensive audit at Petco’s pet care centers and vendor locations. Following rigorous examinations administered by American Humane inspectors over the course of several months, American Humane proudly awarded Petco the coveted American Humane Certified™ seal of approval.
PETCO’S ANIMAL CARE STANDARDS:
Petco continues to be a leader in ethical animal vendor standards, requiring all Petco live animal vendors to participate in the Petco Vendor Certification and Standards of Excellence Program. As part of Petco’s own program, all vendors are inspected and must pass our rigorous certification process that includes annual announced and unannounced onsite audits.
American Humane’s ongoing review and future independent re-certifications of Petco is in addition to our own animal care standards, and Petco’s Vendor Certification and Standards of Excellence program.
