It all started here in San Diego. PETCO, headquartered here, announces the relocation of its very first store in La Mesa, CA. In 1965, the first store that has become PETCO, the premier national pet food and supply retailer, opened in La Mesa. This weekend, Saturday and Sunday January 12 and 13, 2002, grand opening festivities will be held for the new La Mesa store.
PETCO now operates 563 stores in 41 states and the District of Columbia and has annual sales in excess of $1 billion. This year the company will be adding more than 50 stores and plans to add about that many each year for the next several years.
The new La Mesa location is the first in San Diego of a new design concept called the "Millennium Store." This new design has two distinct differences from the previous PETCO store formats. The first and most notable change is that upon entering, one is greeted by our vast family of companion animals.
"By moving our furry friends from the back and sides of our stores to the front we offer the customer the opportunity to enjoy and interact with our animals." Stated Store Manager Sarah Bradley.
The second departure from the previous store design is a new signage program that focuses on educating pet lovers from anything like proper diet, exercise and grooming to housing.
In addition to offering a wide selection of products and hiring and training associates so they become "pet authorities," PETCO is an integral part of the community. Stores offer low cost vaccination programs and invite local schools to take educational tours. PETCO also promotes numerous fundraising activities throughout the year with proceeds collected going to local animal welfare groups. These programs are coordinated through the PETCO Foundation, PETCO's non-profit charity.
Other local store partnerships include working with animal rescue groups and helping promote responsible pet ownership by organizing mobile adoption clinics.
