Saturday was a good day for the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, thanks to PETCO, Iams, the PETCO Foundation, other corporate donors and the PETelethon viewers who called in with pledges or traveled to the shelter to adopt a new family member.
The five-hour event, broadcast Saturday on FOX 6, raised more than $230,000 for the Humane Society. The money will be used to benefit homeless animals and support vital community programs. In addition, 57 sheltered animals found loving homes over the weekend, thanks to concerned San Diegans. The donations included a $10,000 check from the PETCO Foundation.
"The Foundation is pleased to sponsor groups like the San Diego Humane Society because of all they do to help save the lives of adoptable animals," PETCO Foundation Director Paul Jolly said, "and for their commitment to educating the community about the joys companion animals bring to those around them."
San Diego County PETCO stores and Iams each made $5,000 contributions to the Humane Society, and were happy to contribute to such a successful day for the shelter. This is not the first time the two pet supply companies have joined forces to aid the plight of homeless animals. Between November and January, PETCO and Iams supported the Helen Woodward Animal Center's Home 4 the Holidays campaign, which saw more than 100,000 orphaned pets matched with families across the country.
Contributions to the San Diego Humane Society can still be made by calling (619) 299-7012 ext. 250. And they still have a variety of friendly animals who need homes; their descriptions and pictures can be found on the Society's website at http://www.sdhumane.org/ .
