Joel D. Anderson
Joel D. Anderson joined Petco as Chief Executive Officer and a member of the company’s Board of Directors in July 2024.
A retail industry veteran with over three decades of experience, Joel is widely recognized for his operational and merchandising expertise, his passion for leadership development, proven ability to foster strong teams that deliver significant shareholder value and his track record of powering consumer brands for growth.
Prior to Petco, Joel served as CEO of specialty retailer Five Below, Inc., where he led the company’s U.S. expansion, increasing the number of stores from 361 to more than 1,600, and delivering revenue growth that took the organization from $500 million to more than $3.5 billion. He also led the successful launch of the retailer’s e-commerce business, optimized operations, increased productivity and expanded the organization into new retail categories.
Previously, Joel served as President and CEO of Walmart.com from 2011 to 2014. In addition to leading the multi-billion-dollar business, he laid the foundation for the retailer’s entry into digital commerce.
Before that, he served as Senior Vice President of Walmart’s Northern Plains division stores, overseeing more than 100,000 employees and over $25 billion in annual sales.
In addition to his role as Petco’s CEO, Joel also serves on the Board of Directors for Sprouts Farmers Market, as a member of the audit and compensation committees. He is a strong believer in the power of building a positive company culture and developing leadership across the organization.
Joel holds a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School, in addition to a bachelor’s degree in political science and speech communications from St. Olaf College.
He is a devoted father to three daughters and one son, and husband to his wife Amy of over 30 years. Joel has been a pet parent for the majority of his life, most recently to rescue dog Stella. He is based in Petco’s National Support Center in San Diego.
